Opening Up to Life: The Power of Shoulder Alignment and Vision

Sep 07, 2024

As we journey through life, it’s easy to find ourselves closing off—not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually too. Whether you're in your 30s and 40s, juggling the demands of work and family, or over 55, navigating the complexities of menopause, the constant strain can leave us hunched over, tense, and disconnected. We’ve all experienced it—tight necks from working at our computers, shoulders slumped from endless phone scrolling.

I watch my son, head down, eyes locked on his phone. He’s only 20, and I tell him, “Shoulders back, head up!” At his age, it’s easy to brush off the impact of poor posture, but when you hit your 30s, 40s, or 50s, your body starts sending not-so-gentle reminders.

But this isn’t just about avoiding the physical aches and pains we all know too well—it’s about opening up to the fullness of life.

The Computer Stance and Its Impact on Our Energy

Think about that classic computer or phone stance—hunched over, shoulders rolled forward, chest closed off. Not only are we tightening our bodies, but we’re also closing ourselves off from the world around us. We're so focused on that tiny screen, we forget the beauty that surrounds us—the textures, the colors, the sounds of life.

When we consciously open our shoulders and broaden across our collarbones, we’re not just aligning our physical bodies; we’re aligning with life itself. There’s a sense of spaciousness, a softening, an ability to see beyond what's directly in front of us. This openness invites us to be receptive to the flow of life, to take in the beauty and abundance that’s always there, but often overlooked.

Opening the Shoulders, Opening to Life

One of the most powerful practices in yoga is the opening of the shoulders. When we soften the shoulders down the back and broaden the chest, we create an expansive energy in the body. This shift isn’t just about better posture—it’s about living life with a greater sense of presence, joy, and openness.

In our Empower Your Health Journey program, we dive deeply into this, helping you find the connection between your physical alignment and your emotional well-being. It’s not just about the poses—it’s about how those poses translate into your daily life.

Peripheral Vision and Expanding Awareness

Years ago, I attended a retreat with John Friend, the founder of Anusara Yoga. He introduced me to the idea of using all of our vision—not just what’s directly in front of us, but our peripheral vision as well. He taught that we should walk into a room and consciously take it all in—notice the flowers in the corner, the colors on the walls, the textures, the people. This practice of expanding our awareness beyond the immediate helps us draw life into ourselves. It’s a powerful metaphor for how we can open up to the world, allowing ourselves to see and feel more fully.

When we engage in shoulder loops and skull loops, we are not just preparing our bodies —we are preparing our hearts and minds to receive more of what life has to offer.

What This Means for You

For women like you, this practice is transformative. From 35+ you're, constantly balancing career and family, often feels like life is closing in on her. You're so focused on managing everything that you forget to open up and enjoy the beauty around her. Through yoga, you can start to soften, broaden, and allow yourself to breathe again—literally and metaphorically.

For the women 55+, you're navigating the changes of menopause, the physical strain of joint pain and fatigue can leave you feeling disconnected from your body and spirit. By opening your shoulders and expanding your awareness, you can reconnect with the vitality that’s still within you, even during this transitional phase of life.

Opening to Life's Fullness

When we step onto the mat and practice these powerful alignments, we’re doing more than stretching and strengthening—we’re learning to open ourselves up to the fullness of life. We start to see beyond the small screens and the immediate stresses, and we begin to appreciate the beauty that’s always present. Life is constantly offering us moments of grace, joy, and wonder—it’s up to us to open our hearts and minds to receive them.

At Yoga to Transform, this is the essence of our teaching. We believe that wellness isn’t just about the body—it’s about the whole self. Whether you’re working with us to navigate a busy life or finding your strength during menopause, our programs are designed to help you realign, reconnect, and open to life’s beauty and abundance.
