Ananda: The Bliss That Transforms
Nov 18, 2024In the great promises of yoga—Sat, Chit, Ananda (Truth, Consciousness, Bliss)—Ananda is perhaps the most alluring, yet often misunderstood. Bliss, in this sense, is not the fleeting joy of ice cream on a hot day or the thrill of unboxing a new pair of shoes. It’s something far deeper, richer, and more enduring—a state of being that resides within us, constant and unshakeable, no matter what life throws our way.
Ananda is your birthright. It’s not a far-off destination or something to be earned through endless striving. Instead, it’s always present, waiting for you to uncover it beneath the layers of the physical, energetic, and mental noise of daily life. It’s the essence of who you are when you strip away the distractions, fears, and doubts.
Bliss Beyond Pleasure
The yogic path guides us to differentiate between fleeting pleasure and the expansive bliss of Ananda. That bliss is the awe you feel gazing at a majestic mountain range, the quiet wonder of holding your child for the first time, or the profound contentment of being fully present in your body and life.
This is not a momentary high; it’s a baseline of being. Over time, yoga helps raise that baseline—taking us from states of fear, apathy, or anger into courage, love, and finally, bliss. David Hawkins, in Power vs. Force, describes this evolution as a ladder of human consciousness. To reach Ananda, we must first step onto the rung of courage. Courage to show up for ourselves. Courage to face our inner shadows. Courage to believe that a better state is possible.
The Journey Through the Koshas
To experience this state of bliss, the yogic tradition invites us to explore the five koshas, or layers of being. Each one offers a portal to Ananda:
- Annamaya Kosha (Physical Body): Begin with the tangible. Feel your body as it is—dense, alive, and shaped by the food you eat.
- Pranamaya Kosha (Energetic Body): Tune into your breath. Notice how it fuels your vitality and carries the energetic imprints of your life.
- Manomaya Kosha (Mental Body): Observe your thoughts. This is where the mind constructs the illusion of separation, creating the "I" and "other."
- Vijnanamaya Kosha (Wisdom Body): Sink deeper into your inner knowing. Here, insight and clarity shine through the chatter of the mind.
- Anandamaya Kosha (Bliss Body): At last, arrive at your bliss body—the luminous, unchanging core of your being. It’s here that Ananda resides, ever-present, waiting for you to remember it.
Expanding Into Bliss
Ananda is expansive by nature. It invites us to move outward into the world, to experience life fully, and to share our joy with others. Yoga asana, when approached with intention, mirrors this energy. In poses like the banana stretch, we extend through our limbs, creating space in our bodies and connecting to the expansive quality of bliss.
Organic extension, a principle of Anusara yoga, beautifully expresses this. It’s the energy that flows outward from a strong, stable center. In your practice, you might feel this as the reach of your leg in a strap-supported hamstring stretch, or the radiance of your chest in a heart-opening pose. It’s an energy of freedom and opening, reminding us that bliss is not about grasping or holding, but about letting go and allowing.
Living in Bliss
With consistent practice, our baseline state of being transforms. The highs and lows of life become less extreme, and we find ourselves waking up each day with a quiet sense of joy and contentment. This is the promise of Ananda.
Bliss is not something we chase; it’s something we uncover. It’s the radiant truth of who we are beneath the layers of fear, judgment, and limitation.
So, take a moment today. Close your eyes. Breathe into your heart. Feel the light of your inner being expand with each breath. That light is your Ananda—it’s always been there, and it always will be.
You are bliss. You are joy. You are Ananda.
