So when you do yoga classes in a studio or gym a really good teacher would be asking you if you had any injuries or anything that's going to hold you back. They will also be saying listen to your body and do what your body is telling you.
If you're doing our classes you'll get the opportunity to see that there's all sorts of people doing the pose in a different way. This might not might not be the same as you might not even be the same as a teacher which is fine! Do something that feels good to you!
A beginners class is mainly standing positions and moves. You can use a chair or a block or a folded up blanket or something like that a strap. If you’ve seen Audrie’s classes said she quite often just does the standing in tadsana and then adds in the movement from side to side so we're not trying to get you into massive pose.
So if you're in a beginner's yoga class and it trying to get you into how to do the splits, you're probably in the wrong class! The closest you should be getting to splits is lying on your back um with one leg in the air and a strap around the foot. You are just actually learning how to open up your muscles in a safe way. Then to connect the movement to breath.
To do beginners yoga make sure your bones are stacking on top of each other because that alignment. It’s a way of keeping your body safe. You're always trying to make sure that your knee is over your ankle, your shoulder may be over your hip. So feeling in alignment with stability. You will be feeling safe in a good beginner's yoga class.
Beginner classes will be focused more on your breathing and focus more on your your expression of the pose and how it feels comfortable for you. You need to feel a little bit of sensation though! If you're bending forward in a forward fold and your hamstrings don't feel like they're stretching then bend forward a bit more!
So to improve your flexibility and to improve how you feel when you're doing yoga do a little bit often. Don't do it once and then do it again in six months time and expect to be better! It’s like all our physical practices you just need to do a little bit frequently. Two or three times a week is good.
Notice how your body feels when you've gotten into the habit of doing yoga. So if you sign up for our course then do the classes three times a week. We outline how to do the class. We start with foundations which is the feet and then how to stand properly and then we move into standing poses. The standing poses open up all parts of your body to get on the floor and do seated poses. Notice as you get stronger and more flexible how your movement and mobility outside of a yoga class transforms.
The effect of yoga practice will spread out into all aspects of your physical life.
It'll transform your sleeping too. It helps you focus on your breath, you will have stretched your muscles and then when it's time to go to bed you'll feel a bit lighter and you will be able to go to fall to sleep and stay asleep longer.
