Embarking on the Journey Within: The Prelude to Meditation

Dec 04, 2023

In the hustle and bustle of our extroverted world, where attention is constantly pulled toward external stimuli, the art of meditation becomes a gentle yet profound journey of turning inward. As we venture into the practice, we encounter the vital preparatory phase known as "Pratyahara" or the withdrawal of the senses—a necessary warm-up to meditation.

The Extroverted World and Its Distractions:

In a world filled with billboards, social media, news outlets, and ceaseless external stimuli, our attention is habitually directed outward. The initial challenge in meditation lies in breaking free from this cycle of perpetual distraction. Closing our eyes, a basic yet pivotal step in Pratyahara, marks the beginning of withdrawing our senses from the external world.

Training the Mind to Retreat:

Pratyahara serves as a training ground for the mind, a space where we learn to draw our awareness away from external influences and anchor it within. Closing the eyes acts as a symbolic gesture, shutting out the visual distractions that vie for our attention. However, it is only the first step in this inward journey.

The Persistence of External Dominance:

Despite the physical act of closing our eyes, the mind may still be dominated by thoughts, images, or mental distractions rooted in the external world. The first stage of meditation involves recognizing and acknowledging these distractions without judgment. It's akin to a gentle reminder that we are still in the process of learning to bring our attention fully within.

Fidgeting and Mental Restlessness:

As we sit in the practice of Pratyahara, we may notice a tendency to fidget or a stream of thoughts pulling us away. Fidgeting often stems from the body's habitual connection to external stimuli. The mind, accustomed to a constant influx of information, may resist the stillness that Pratyahara demands.

Embracing the Discomfort of Stillness:

In tonight's meditation practice, we embrace the discomfort that arises from the stillness. The challenge lies in confronting the body's addiction to external stimuli, recognizing the mind's relentless thought patterns, and allowing ourselves to sit in the discomfort of quietude.

Cultivating Inner Awareness:

Pratyahara is a practice that unfolds over time. It is about cultivating inner awareness and discerning the moments when external distractions attempt to regain dominance. By holding a space of stillness, focusing on the breath, and resisting the urge to succumb to the fidgeting or mental restlessness, we pave the way for the deeper realms of meditation.

A Silent Journey Within:

Meditation is an invitation to experience the journey within without external guidance. As you take a comfortable seat, close your eyes, and center your attention on the breath, notice the distractions that arise. Witness the thoughts, feelings, and fidgeting without judgment, gently guiding your awareness back to the breath.

In this silent exploration of Pratyahara, we embark on the initial steps toward meditation, fostering an intimate connection with the inner sanctum of our being. The journey inward is a sacred pilgrimage, and with patience, the mind learns to surrender to the stillness, unlocking the profound depths of meditation.
