Illuminating the Hidden Spaces
Nov 27, 2024Awareness is the light of consciousness, and it shapes the very fabric of our experiences. It flows wherever we direct our will, creating a relationship between what we focus on and what we come to know. In both yoga and life, awareness is the ultimate cause of experience. Yet, how often do we notice that certain parts of our body—and even our lives—remain shrouded in shadows, untouched by this light?
Take a moment to consider your back body. Because it’s out of sight, it often remains out of mind. We lead with our front body—the part of ourselves we see and show to the world. But the back body, rich with untapped awareness, holds hidden tension, forgotten strength, and untold stories.
Bringing awareness to these unseen places is a practice of will and intention. It’s not about forcing change but about gently illuminating what’s been overlooked. Asana invites us into this exploration. Through poses like Supported Bridge, Child’s Pose, and Prone Twists, we begin to feel into the back ribs, the spine, and the backs of our legs. Touching these spaces with awareness brings them to life, softening tension, inviting release, and fostering balance.
Awareness follows attention. When we consciously direct our focus to the breath or the hidden spaces of our body, we expand our capacity to feel and to know. Even the simple act of breathing can illuminate this principle. Try this: First, let your front ribs expand and contract with your breath. Then, shift your awareness to the back body. Imagine your breath cascading down the spine, filling the back ribs, the kidneys, and the space behind your heart. Notice how the sensation changes.
This practice isn’t limited to the mat. In our busy, outward-facing lives, it’s easy to act only from what we see—the visible layers of our to-do lists, the roles we play, the grass that needs mowing or the dog hair piling up. But what happens when we pause and shine awareness on what’s hidden? We begin to illuminate not just forgotten spaces in the body but also the parts of our lives that have been waiting for our attention.
So today, let this be your practice: bring your awareness to the hidden spaces, both within and around you. Let the light of your consciousness illuminate the unseen and, in doing so, deepen your connection to your truest self. After all, what you illuminate, you transform.
