Maha Prema: The Great Love That Connects Us All
Mar 01, 2025
As we close our journey through the theme of love, we arrive at its most expansive expression: Maha Prema, or divine love. This is the love that exists beyond conditions, beyond self-imposed limits, beyond the illusion of separation. It is the very fabric of our being, the essence of who we are.
The Great Illusion of Separation
In yoga philosophy, we recognize three great illusions, and perhaps the most powerful one is the belief that we are separate—from each other, from the world, from the divine. Our physical bodies seem to define a boundary between ‘me’ and ‘you,’ between ‘inside’ and ‘outside.’ But this boundary is more permeable than it appears.
Consider the simple act of breathing. With each inhale, we draw the world into us, and with each exhale, we merge with everything around us. Our skin absorbs, our senses extend, and even though we might perceive ourselves as isolated fortresses, we are in a constant dance of exchange with the universe. When we truly see this, we understand that the walls we think divide us are illusions.
Love as the Ultimate Reality
Throughout this journey, we have explored different layers of love: opening ourselves to love, allowing ourselves to receive it, and embracing self-love as the foundation of how we love others. Now, we return to the source—remembering that love is not just something we do; it is what we are.
When we root ourselves in this knowing, we dissolve the divisions that the world so often tries to impose. In times when fear, conflict, and separation seem amplified, this practice of remembrance becomes more vital than ever. It becomes our anchor. Our guiding light. Our truth.
Returning to Oneness
Yoga teaches us to see beyond contrast and opposition. While we celebrate our differences, we also look deeply enough to recognize our shared essence. The deeper we go, the more we realize that everything—every being, every experience, every moment—is simply love expressing itself in infinite forms.
When we remember this, we stop resisting life. We stop feeling apart from it. We begin to live in the certainty that only love is real. And in that certainty, we become fully present, fully alive, fully free.
This is Maha Prema. This is our true nature. This is yoga.
May we continue to return, again and again, to the love that never leaves us—the love that we have never left.
