Slowly and Simply: A Yogic and Ayurvedic Approach to Transformation

Oct 23, 2024

Life in modern times moves at breakneck speed. We fill our days with work, family responsibilities, personal goals, and aspirations. We’re juggling a million things at once, trying to achieve more in less time. But in the midst of all this, where is the space for simplicity? Where is the time to slow down and breathe?

I’ve been reflecting deeply on this as I’m currently in day two of an Ayurvedic cleanse. The theme of the cleanse is slowly and simply, and it’s been a profound reminder of what is truly essential in healing and transformation.

Both Yoga and Ayurveda teach us that transformation is not meant to be a fast, hurried process. We spend a lifetime creating habits, attachments, and the very things that hold us back from living in alignment with our soul’s purpose. And when we finally begin a path of healing, we often want it to be instantaneous. We crave quick results, but the truth is, the most lasting and effective change happens slowly and simply.

The Antidote to Modern Life

Our lives have become far too complex, far too fast. We’ve conditioned ourselves to believe that success means never stopping, never resting, always pushing forward. But if you’re like me—juggling personal growth, career, parenting, and everything in between—you know how draining that pace can be. I’ve lived it.

Since launching Yoga to Transform in 2021, my life has been anything but slow and simple. It’s been full and demanding. From the fear of leaving my corporate job to jumping into intense trainings, balancing business and motherhood as a solo parent, and constantly starting new projects—there’s been no rest, no gap to breathe. I have found myself hosting virtual Tony Robbins trainings at 2 a.m., then catching a flight two days later for a yoga immersion, only to return home and launch new programs. It has been non-stop.

But here's the thing—when we live life at this pace, we burn out. We lose the essence of what both Yoga and Ayurveda are really teaching us: to slow down and nourish ourselves deeply.

Where Can We Simplify?

Ayurveda, the sister science of yoga, reminds us that balance is key. Each of us has our own constitution (dosha), and mine is a combination of vata and pitta, which loves to start new things, create, and lead. But leadership isn’t just about doing—it’s about leading yourself with wisdom. It’s about knowing when to stop, when to simplify, and when to choose ease over constant action.

We don't need complex solutions to solve the complexity of our lives. In fact, the simplest practices can be the most powerful. Take the practice of breathing, for example. One of the most effective tools to calm the nervous system and bring us back to our center is pranayama—specifically, box breathing (Soma breathing). This practice is as simple as counting your breath—inhale for four counts, hold for four, exhale for four, and hold again. It’s a practice that grounds us and reminds us to stay present, to slow down, and to reconnect with the rhythm of life.

So, as I sit with this theme of slowly and simply, I ask myself: where in my life am I going too fast? What can I simplify?

Embracing the Feminine Earth Mother

For me, the answer lies in embracing a more nurturing, feminine energy. I’ve realized that while I can do it all—build businesses, create content, support my family—I don’t have to do it all, not all at once, and not at the expense of my own well-being.

The path of Ayurveda and yoga teaches us to honor the natural cycles of life, to recognize when it’s time to grow and when it’s time to rest. This is especially important for those of us with busy lives, creative spirits, and a desire to lead. True leadership comes from knowing when to step back, slow down, and simplify.

And so, if you’re reading this and feel the pull to rush through life, to achieve everything now, to handle all the complexities of your world—pause. Take a breath. Reflect on where you can bring more simplicity into your life. Ask yourself: What is truly necessary, and what can I let go of?

The answers might surprise you.

A Call to Simplify

As women, we’re often expected to be everything to everyone. But what if we turned inward and realized that in order to give our best to the world, we need to give ourselves the gift of simplicity? Healing, growth, and transformation happen slowly. They require patience, gentleness, and ease.

The beauty of yoga and Ayurveda is that they guide us toward that simplicity. They remind us that we don’t need elaborate solutions to live vibrant, fulfilling lives. We simply need to tune in, slow down, and allow the process to unfold naturally.

So, today, I invite you to embrace slowly and simply in your own life. Take a moment to pause, breathe, and reflect on what truly matters. In that space of simplicity, you’ll find the nourishment and transformation you’ve been seeking all along.

Remember, it’s not about doing more. It’s about doing less—and doing it with intention.
